In contrast to the USA and the UK, Switzerland has so far been spared a major wave of layoffs - despite the coronavirus crisis. How the Commercial newspaper employment levels in the third quarter of 2021 were even higher than before the crisis, and 75,000 new jobs were created.
The Handelszeitung sees one possible reason for this positive development in the government's good crisis management, which has focused on preserving jobs, e.g. with short-time working. However, another reason could be the general uncertainty, which has led to people postponing their resignation since March 2020 - despite possible job dissatisfaction - for fear of not finding a new job.
And dissatisfaction appears to be high, as a survey by a personnel service provider suggests: around 50% of Swiss employees are dissatisfied with their job. This raises the question, for employees and employers alike, of how productive and efficient employees who are only half-heartedly doing their job still are.
Many people find it difficult to say goodbye to something that has not been right for a long time.
Better a bird in the hand than a pigeon on the roof, some people seem to say. And even line managers do not take the decision to part company with an employee lightly. As a rule, they have held many discussions with the person concerned and taken many measures to avert such a decision. Dismissal is usually the last resort.
If an employee is finally made redundant, it is important to manage the separation process as carefully and empathetically as possible. This is because they are always emotional, not only for those directly affected, but also for the "bereaved" employees, who often react with great uncertainty - especially if several employees leave the company at the same time. In such situations, it can make sense to seek professional support to help with the separation process.
At Newplace, specialists in employment law, human resources, the labor market and coaching work hand in hand and provide advice on employment law issues, draw up redundancy plans or support those affected in their search for a new job in an empathetic and professional manner.
