What is good leadership?

We are repeatedly asked what good leadership is. Is it possible to make a general statement here? To make a long story short: We think so - yes. Good leadership can be defined and measured.

Ultimately, leadership is defined by the influence someone has and so it is always about what impact is achieved. Managers who have a very positive effect on the well-being and performance of employees can certainly be described as "good" managers. They influence the following factors, among others: low fluctuation in the team, fewer sick days, comparatively few cases of burnout, increased creativity and problem-solving and a high level of resilience among employees and managers. Another factor is, of course, the actual performance of the employees and the economic success of the company.

The entire employee lifecycle counts

At Newplace we deal with Outplacement and, in this context, how managers behave when it comes to dismissals. How a separation is handled is the ultimate test of a people-oriented and appreciative leader or leadership culture. If an impending termination or reorganization is discussed proactively and transparently with employees and employees are involved in the process, it is easier for everyone involved to see opportunities in this situation and to be able to break new ground. How you deal with employees in this difficult phase has a major external impact. The employees who remain in the organization also take a close look at how the employee is treated as a person.

A people-centric and appreciative leadership style is deeply rooted in an organization and is evident throughout the entire organization. Employee Lifecyclefrom the recruitment process to the onboarding and development of employees, right through to any necessary Separations.

Good leadership has clear factors and behaviors

Positive psychology (Martin Seligmann) has given rise to the field of positive leadership. Many studies have investigated what it takes for people and companies to flourish. Dr. Markus Ebner and his team have developed the PERMA-Lead model and have also conducted scientifically sound studies to prove what good leadership is and which 5 factors mainly contribute to someone being a "positive leader":

Positive emotions the manager facilitates positive emotions among employees

Commitment the manager promotes individual commitment

Relationships creates sustainable relationships

Meaning conveys meaning in work

Accomplishment makes achievements visible

Studies across different industries, countries and cultures have shown that it is these 5 factors that enable a team to perform at its best.
